Combined Vowels
The Korean combined vowels are the fourth and final group of letters to master. They are probably the most difficult to pronounce as some of the letters contain slight sound differences. Learning these vowels might require some extra study time, but as long as you memorize how they sound as portions to whole words in English (as noted below) you will be able to learn these fairly quickly.
Below are the 11 combined vowels found in the Korean alphabet. Be sure to pay attention to the specific differences in the way they sound.
ㅐ (ae) ~~
pronounced “ae” as in “pay”
ㅒ (yae) ~~
pronounced “yae” as in “yea!”
ㅔ (e) ~~
pronounced “e” as in “egg”
ㅖ (ye) ~~
pronounced “ye” as in “yet”
ㅚ (weh) ~~
pronounced “weh” as in “whey”
ㅟ (we) ~~
pronounced “we” as in “we”
ㅘ (wa) ~~
pronounced “wa” as in “water”
ㅙ (wae) ~~
pronounced “wae” as in “way”
ㅝ (wa) ~~
pronounced “wa” as in “war”
ㅞ (we) ~~
pronounced “we” as in “wet”
ㅢ (we) ~~
pronounced as “we” only without a strong “w” sound at the beginning
